An apron is bought for someone else nine times out of ten, which means the question is never "will it fit me" but "will it fit them". This is the honest specification of the personalised apron: size, fabric, pockets, print and washing, written so you can decide from your sofa.
Size and who it fits
The panel measures about 75 cm long and 59 cm wide, not including the neck strap. In practice that covers from the chest to just above the knee on someone of average height, and to the knee on someone shorter. Two things make it fit almost anyone:
- The neck strap adjusts, so the bib sits at the right height on a 1.55 m grandmother and a 1.90 m son-in-law.
- The waist ties are extra long, so they can be tied at the back in the usual way, or wrapped round and tied at the front, which is what most people do once they discover it. Wrapping round also lets the ties fit a larger waist comfortably rather than just reaching.
It is one size; there is no separate men's or women's cut, and none is needed at this shape. For a child, the kids apron is the one to order instead.
Fabric
100% polyester, soft to the touch and wrinkle resistant, which matters for an apron that spends its life folded in a drawer between Sundays. It is water and stain resistant: spills, grease and splashes sit on the surface long enough to be wiped, rather than soaking straight through to the shirt. It is not waterproof, and a full jug of water will get through eventually; it is designed for cooking, baking and barbecuing, not for washing the dog.
Polyester is also the reason the print looks the way it does. The design is sublimated into the fibres rather than sitting on top, so there is no plastic patch to feel, nothing to peel at the edges, and the print softens with the fabric rather than cracking. It also means the design cannot be white: the fabric colour shows where the design is pale, so on the black apron pick a light text colour and on the white apron a dark one.
Pockets
Two large front pockets, side by side, at hand height. They take a phone, a tea towel, a thermometer, a pair of tongs, and in one memorable order a small dog's lead. If the design is a name across the chest, the pockets sit below it and do not interfere; a logo or a long line of text sits above the pocket line by default.
Colours
Black or white. Black hides sauce and reads as chef; white reads as baker and shows a colour design more brightly. If the person cooks for a living or barbecues in it, black. If it is a Sunday baker or a child helper, white.
Washing
Machine washable at a low temperature; it dries quickly and rarely needs ironing. Wash it inside out with similar colours, skip the tumble dryer if you can, and do not iron over the printed area.
