Personalise-Your-Own Christmas Ornament Kit: An Afternoon That Ends in Decorations

Personalise-your-own Christmas ornament craft kit for kids

Most Christmas crafts end with glitter in the carpet and nothing on the tree. The personalise-your-own Christmas ornament kit is designed to end differently: six cardstock ornament blanks, six mix-and-match festive sticker sheets and six white hanging strings, so the afternoon finishes with six decorations hanging somewhere. This is how to run it.

What is in the box

  • 6 cardstock Christmas ornament blanks
  • 6 mix-and-match festive sticker sheets
  • 6 white hanging strings

Sticker designs and ornament shapes vary slightly between sets, which makes each kit a small surprise and two kits for two children different.

Ages

Four to about nine on their own; three with help; older children if you add the kitchen-drawer extras below. Stickers rather than glue is the reason it suits the younger end: no drying time, no mess, and a decision (which sticker, where) that a four-year-old can make.

Running it without tears

  1. One blank each to start, not all six on the table.
  2. Write the name and the year on the back first, in pen. That is the personalising, and it is what makes the ornament worth keeping.
  3. Stickers on the front, then the string through the hole, then it goes straight on the tree or the door, before the next one. Finishing each one is the point.
  4. Keep one blank back for a grandparent, made by the child, posted flat in an envelope.

Kitchen-drawer extras

Felt-tip pens for names and faces; a hole punch if a string hole tears; a bit of ribbon instead of string for the front-door one; a photo cut to size and stuck on a blank for a photo ornament, which is the one that survives to next year.

Where the finished ornaments go

The tree, the bedroom door, the classroom wall, the festive shelf, and one in the stocking on Christmas Eve. Because they are cardstock they store flat in a box with the decorations and come out next year with the name and the year on the back, which is the moment this kit is for.

As a gift and as a plan

A kit in a stocking, a Christmas Eve box, a party bag, or as the thing to do on the first afternoon of the holidays; it also works as a class activity with one kit per two children. It is not personalised at our end (the child does that), so it can be ordered up to the last week; everything is checked and packed in Cheshire, usually dispatched within one to three working days, with free UK delivery. More afternoons are in half-term crafts with kids, and the kit is in the Christmas shop.
